Training Programme on Farmer's Rights at CAU

Imphal, December 19 2012: A one-day training cum awareness programme on 'Farmers' Rights in the regime of PPV & FR Act 2001' organised by Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, College of Agriculture was held today at the CAU conference hall.

Stating that today's programme is aimed at facilitating farmers of Imphal East and West districts understand their rights and responsibilities in the context of PPV & FR Act 2001, CAU Vice Chancellor Dr SN Puri, as chief guest of the inaugural programme, informed that similar initiatives would be taken to cover farmers in the entire State.

Exuding confidence that farmer participants would gain important knowledge on not only their rights but on various methods to enhance their products in a sustainable manner, he also conveyed that the 2001 Act was specifically enacted by the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure farmers record patent rights and contribute towards food grain security of the country.

The opening session was also attended by CAU's Director if Research Dr M Rohinikumar Singh along with CAU's Director of Extension Dr M Premjit Singh and Dean of College of Agriculture Dr N Iboton Singh as the functional president and guests of honour respectively.

In the technical session, Deputy Registrar, PPV & FR Authority (Guwahati) Dr Atul Chandra Sharma elaborated on the programme theme while AMAPCON president P Devakanta briefed the gathering on 'Registration of Farmers' variety', Head of Department of PBG Dr JM Laishram on 'Plant Breeders' Right in PPV & FR Act 2001' and PBG's professor Dr Ph Ranjit Sharma on 'Varietal Collection and registration'
