VC visited RAWE Village in Pungdongbam
Imphal, 4 October: The Vice-Chancellor, Prof S.N.Puri, CentralAgricultural University, Imphal visited the RAWE (Rural Agricultural Work Experience) Village at Pungdongbam in Imphal East, where the final year B.Sc. (Agri) girl students of the College ofAgriculture, CAU, Imphal are posted on 4thOctober, 2012 and advised the RAWE students in presence of Dean, Dr N Iboton Singh, College of Agriculture to organize several rural based programme at Pungdongbam namely, vaccination programme of cattle, Medical Health Camp, Embroidery, Preservation of locally available fruits and vegetables as value added products etc. for the Village. RAWE girl students and farmers assured to perform those activity in Pungdongbam villages.

Plan to rise mustard oil during drought season
Imphal/Oct 4: A one-day sensitization workshop on the topic 'Augmenting rape-seed-mustard production as strategic contingent plan for drought-like situation in Manipur' was organised by Directorate of Extension Education, Central Agricultural university at the CAU Assembly Hall on Wednesday.
As chief guest of the workshop's inaugural programme, Dean of College of Agriculture Dr N Iboton Singh expressed that even though rainfall inadequacy during June-July months, the peak paddy plantation period, caused anxiety to the farmers late onset of seasonal rainfall in September provided some relief to the farmer community.
Noting that late arrival of the monsoon rain would affect paddy yield in many part of the State's cultivation area, Dr Iboton strongly advocated plantation of rape-seeds soon after harvest of paddy plants to supplement income of the farmers.
Informing that the previous season had yielded about 700 to 1400 kgs of common mustard seeds, he called upon the farmers to grow Ragini variety of mustard seeds to enhance quantity of harvest.
Dr Iboton also prevailed upon the farmers to consult subject experts prior to growing Ragini variety as the new variety not only require timely plantation but the soil need to be tested to check its suitability.
He further conveyed to the farmers that they could use water pumps available at the disposal of CAU by bearing the fuel expenses.
Speaking at the occasion, Director of Research, CAU Dr M Rohinikumar Singh said that in the previous season rape-seeds cultivation was taken up at about 500 paris of land.
He exuded confidence that cultivation of the new variety would be carried out on a wider scale this time around.

CAU to venture into integrated farming
The Directorate of Extensive Education, Central Agricultural University (CAU) has launched a two-day training programme on, 'Contingency Planning and Strategic Management during Extreme Weather Situation' at its Mini Conference Hall on September 3, 2012.
Speaking as the functional President, Director of Extensive Education CAU, Dr. M Premjit Singh said that animal farming is most profitable, so an integrated framing approach has to be done to enhance the production and improve the economic status of farmers. The university is planning to venture on an integrated farming and it is likely to start with paddy cum fish culture in near future.
Further, he informed that CAU has been successfully implementing its model planning in various places especially at Andro area. In various parts of the state, CAU would also plant red mustard covering an area of 1000 hectare during the current fiscal year. A participatory approach between the university and farmers/ clubs organizations is also need to make the model a success. Pointing out that climate change is a slow process but it affects the yield of the crops, the Director mentioned some of the measures to mitigate drought like situation in the state like popularization of roof top water harvesting, conversion of springs at hilly areas into ponds micro irrigation system, strengthening seed bank, extensive climatic literacy, etc.
Chief Guest of the function, Dr N Iboton Singh, Dean, College of Agriculture, CAU, noted that we are experiencing higher temperature and such sudden change in climatic condition may lead to extinction of rare species. Highlighting the importance of producing drought resistant seed varieties, Iboton suggested co-operation between agricultural scientists and government agencies to redress the problem.
Pointing out the impact of draught on crops, Dr L Nabachandra Singh, Head of the Dept of Agronomy, CAU said during the technical session of the training programme that it affects respiration, photosynthesis, reduction of cell size due to anatomical and harmonic changes.
As an impact of the 2002 drought, which hit 17 states around central India, 15% of the country's foodproduction was decreased. Poor farmer sold out their livestock for want of water and fodder, children could not go to school and a large number of farmers could not resume agricultural activities till now, said the expert.

Training on Tuber Crop Based Farming
As the State could hardly produce sufficient rice for consumption, the introduction of tuber crops would help in enhancing production of food stuff in the State, said Dr Premjit, Director of Extension and Education, CAU.
He was speaking at the one-day awareness programme on tuber crop based farming system for sustainable production and income generation under the Central Agriculture University's All India Coordinated Research Project on Tuber Crops at Chanung Mayai Leikai in Imphal East yesterday.
Speaking as the chief guest of the programme, Dr Premjit said the cultivation of food crops like potato, bean, etc apart from paddy, would pay dividend in realising the much needed food security in the State.
He however said the prospect of marketing the crops should first be identified.
The programme was also attended by Dr M Ruhinikumar, Research Director, CAU Imphal; K Kipgen, Additional Director of Horticulture and Soil Conservation department as the president and guest of honour respectively.
The resource persons of the training programme included Dr Kh Ibohal Singh, Sr Assistant Professor, Dept of Entomology, College of Agriculture, CAU; Dr Ak Bijaya Devi, Associate Professor of Dept of Horticulture; Dr Bireshwar Singh, Assistant Professor of Dept of Pathology; Monibala Devi, SMSS of KVK Imphal East; and Dr Th Sushilkumar, programme Assistant.
